“How much will it cost?” is the first question most homeowners ask us — and the honest answer is that there’s no single price for a fence in New Jersey. Two 150-foot fences on the same street can differ by thousands of dollars depending on the material, the height, the number of gates, the slope of the yard and whether an old fence has to come out first.

This guide breaks down what actually drives fence cost in New Jersey, gives you rough ballpark ranges by material, and shows you how to get a number you can trust. We’re a family-owned installer based in Wayne, and every estimate we give is free, written and itemized — no surprise add-ons.

What drives the cost of a fence?

Before any per-foot number means anything, these are the factors that move it:

  • Material. The single biggest driver — chain link sits at the budget end, cedar and ornamental aluminum at the premium end.
  • Linear footage. More fence means more materials and labor, though longer runs sometimes lower the cost per foot.
  • Height. A 6-foot privacy fence uses more material than a 4-foot picket.
  • Gates. Every gate adds hardware and labor; a wide double gate or an automated one adds more.
  • Terrain. Sloped, rocky or heavily rooted yards — common in New Jersey — take longer and may need racked panels or stepped sections. Handling uneven ground properly is skilled work.
  • Old fence removal. Tearing out and hauling away an existing fence is an added line item.
  • Permits. Most New Jersey towns require a zoning permit — see our town-by-town permit guide. We include filing it in our estimates.
  • Site access. Tight backyards, no gate access for equipment, or utility conflicts can all add labor.

Fence cost by material

Every property is different, so treat the following as general ballpark ranges for installed fencing, not a quote — your written estimate is the only accurate number. As a rough guide, from most economical to most premium:

  • Chain link — the budget end. Galvanized or PVC-coated chain link is the lowest cost per foot and fast to install. Privacy slats and commercial grades cost more.
  • Wood — mid-range and fully customizable. Pressure-treated pine is the value option; Eastern White Cedar and board-on-board privacy styles sit higher.
  • Vinyl — mid-to-premium. Vinyl costs more up front than wood but needs almost no upkeep, which often makes it cheaper over its lifespan.
  • Aluminum — premium. Ornamental aluminum is pool-code friendly and never rusts; cost rises with decorative styles and taller heights.

A simple way to think about it: chain link and pressure-treated wood are the budget tiers, vinyl and cedar the mid tier, and ornamental aluminum and custom wood the premium tier. For a typical residential yard, linear footage swings the total more than anything else — which is why a measured, written estimate beats any online average. Does a fence add value to your home?

For many New Jersey homeowners a fence pays back in more than dollars — privacy, security, pet and child safety, and curb appeal. A clean vinyl or aluminum fence in particular can lift how a property shows to buyers. It’s worth weighing the cost against those returns, not just the sticker price.

How much does a fence cost per foot in New Jersey?
It varies widely by material and site, but as a rough guide chain link is the lowest cost per linear foot, wood and vinyl sit in the middle, and ornamental aluminum and custom cedar are at the premium end. Gates, height, slope and old-fence removal all change the final number, so a free written estimate is the only accurate figure.
What is the cheapest fence option in NJ?
Galvanized chain link is almost always the most economical fence per foot, followed by pressure-treated wood. If budget is the priority, we'll walk you through the trade-offs so you still get something that lasts.
Does the price include the permit?
In our estimates, yes. Most New Jersey towns require a zoning permit, and we include preparing and filing it — along with any old-fence removal — as itemized lines, so there are no surprises.
Is financing available for a fence?
Yes. We offer 0% financing so you can spread the cost over time. Ask about it when you get your estimate.
Why are two quotes for the same fence so different?
Usually it comes down to what's included. A low number may leave out permit filing, old-fence removal, gate hardware or proper post depth. Compare itemized written estimates rather than just totals, and make sure the crew is licensed, insured and not subcontracting the work.
