Most installed in Somerset Vinyl fence in Somerset County
The dominant residential choice in Bridgewater, Hillsborough, Branchburg and Franklin-adjacent subdivisions — uniform, low maintenance and easy to get past an HOA.
Somerset County runs from Bridgewater and Hillsborough's suburban grid out to the horse country of Bedminster and Far Hills. Long estate runs, HOA rules and pool code — handled.
Somerset County splits cleanly along an east–west line, and so does the fencing work. The eastern and central half — Bridgewater, Hillsborough, Branchburg, Bound Brook, Somerville, North Plainfield — is suburban New Jersey at its most conventional: planned subdivisions, quarter- to half-acre lots, in-ground pools and homeowners' associations with written rules about what a fence may look like. Vinyl privacy and ornamental aluminum do the bulk of that work, and the constraint is usually approval, not terrain.
West of Route 206 the county becomes the Somerset Hills. Bedminster, Far Hills, Peapack-Gladstone, Bernardsville and parts of Bernards are horse country — large parcels, rolling terrain, long driveways and fence runs measured in hundreds of feet rather than dozens. Here the question is rarely privacy. It is property definition, containment and appearance from a distance, which is why post-and-rail, split rail and estate-grade aluminum carry those projects.
Homeowners' associations deserve a specific mention in Somerset because they are more common and more prescriptive here than in the northern counties we serve. Many developments specify permitted height, material, color and even which side of the property line the fence may occupy. We ask for the HOA guidelines during the estimate — reading them before ordering material is far cheaper than taking a fence down after a violation letter.
The county's terrain adds two more variables. The Raritan River and its tributaries create flood-prone stretches through Manville, Bound Brook and South Bound Brook, where post depth and material selection have to account for periodic water. And the Watchung ridge towns — Warren, Watchung, Green Brook — bring the same sloped, rocky conditions we handle in Essex, requiring racked or stepped runs.

Every county in New Jersey has its own ground, its own rules and its own failure modes. These are the four that decide how we build here.
Somerset has more prescriptive homeowners' associations than anywhere else we work. We ask for the guidelines up front and design within them, so approval is a formality instead of a problem.
Bedminster, Far Hills and Peapack-Gladstone projects run hundreds of feet across rolling ground. We plan post spacing and grade transitions so the top line reads straight from the driveway, not just up close.
Manville, Bound Brook and South Bound Brook flood. We set posts deeper and pick materials and panel designs that survive standing water rather than acting as a dam.
Somerset has a high concentration of in-ground pools. We build barriers to BOCA pool code from the start — four-foot minimum, sub-four-inch spacing, self-closing and self-latching gates — so the enclosure passes inspection first time.
There is no single county-wide fence ordinance in New Jersey — each of Somerset County's 21 municipalities writes its own. Here is the pattern, and how we handle it.

One per municipality in Somerset County. We verify yours by address before quoting — never by county-wide assumption.
All twenty-one Somerset County municipalities require zoning approval for a new fence, and most want a survey or plot plan. The wrinkle here is that municipal approval and HOA approval are two separate processes with different rules, and clearing one does not clear the other. A six-foot vinyl fence can be perfectly legal under the township ordinance and still violate your development's covenants.
We file the municipal application, plot plan and fees, and schedule the inspection as part of your estimate. Where an association is involved we will build the design to its published guidelines, but the association submission itself stays with the homeowner since most associations only accept it from the property owner of record.
