What drives the cost

6 factors that decide your fence cost

Two homes on the same street can land at very different prices for the same fence. Here's what we look at when we write your proposal.

Total fence length

The biggest single driver. Most NJ residential jobs run 80–250 ft of perimeter — measure all sides you want enclosed.

Material choice

Chain link sits at the affordable end; vinyl, wood and aluminum step up in cost and longevity. Cedar wood and premium woodgrain vinyl carry a higher tier.

Terrain difficulty

Sloped or rocky NJ lots take more labor. Hidden roots and underground utilities also add time — we account for both during the site visit.

Gates

Single, double, walk or driveway — every gate adds material and hardware. We price gates per unit on the written proposal so you see each one separately.

Fence height

A 6 ft fence is the privacy baseline. 4 ft is common for front yards and pools; 8 ft is maximum privacy and may need a permit variance.

Material comparison

Investment tier, lifespan and maintenance for the four materials we install most in northern New Jersey. We send a written proposal with your actual numbers after you fill in the configurator above.

Material Investment Lifespan Maintenance Best for
Chain link $ 15–20 yrs Minimal Pets, security, budget projects
Wood $$ 15–20 yrs Stain every 2–3 yrs Classic look, customization
Aluminum $$ 25+ yrs Almost none Pool code, ornamental front yards
Vinyl $$–$$$ 25–30+ yrs Wash occasionally Privacy, low-maintenance owners

Relative investment scale: $ most accessible · $$$ highest tier. Actual numbers in your written proposal.

What's in the proposal

What you're paying for (vs. doing it yourself)

Included with a pro install

  • Permit pulled with your town hall
  • Markout for underground utilities (free, required)
  • Professional removal & disposal of old fence
  • Posts set in concrete to NJ frost depth
  • Manufacturer warranty on materials
  • Workmanship warranty on labor

Common DIY pitfalls in NJ

  • No utility markout = damaged lines = personal liability
  • Frost-shallow posts heave in NJ winters
  • Code-violating heights mean tear-downs
  • Rented digger doesn't break NJ bedrock — rentals add up
  • No supplier discount: retail material is significantly more
  • A failed corner re-do typically costs more than hiring out

Fence cost FAQ

How does this tool work?
Tell us about your project — material, length, height, gates, and terrain — and we send you a written, line-item proposal tailored to your specific yard. Every NJ property is different (corners, slopes, soil, existing structures), so we prefer to quote on real measurements rather than guess online.
Why don't you show prices upfront?
Honest answer: any number you see on a generic calculator is going to be wrong for your property. Posting a price range here forces every job into that range, which hurts homeowners who need a smaller fence and burns trust when a complex job goes higher. We'd rather measure, listen, and give you a real number you can compare apples-to-apples with other quotes.
What happens after I submit my project info?
You'll get an email confirmation within minutes. A fence pro reviews your project, then either replies with a written estimate or schedules a free on-site visit (most NJ jobs need this so we can spot terrain, utilities, and code factors). Either way, you usually hear back within one business day.
Why are some materials more expensive than others?
Chain link uses thin galvanized wire and lightweight posts — fast to install. Vinyl, wood and aluminum use heavier panels, more posts per linear foot, more concrete, and longer install time. Within a material, premium tiers (cedar wood, double-walled vinyl, ornamental aluminum) sit at a higher price tier than standard grades.
Are permits included in the estimate?
Yes. We pull the permit with your town and the fee is rolled into our written proposal. NJ requires permits on most residential fences over 4 ft, and many towns require them at any height — we handle the paperwork so you don't have to.
Do you finance installations?
Yes. We offer 0% APR promotional financing through Synchrony. See our financing page for plan examples and the soft-credit application — no impact on your score to check eligibility.
How long does installation take?
A typical 150–200 ft residential fence is installed in 1–3 days. Demolition of an old fence adds half a day. Sloped or rocky terrain may add a day. We schedule a firm start date once permits are in hand.
Do you only install fences, or do repairs too?
Both. We do full installs (residential and commercial) and fence repair. If your fence is partially damaged, we can match material and rebuild a section rather than redo the whole run.
