Essex County packs two entirely different fencing markets into twenty-two municipalities. Along the eastern edge — Newark, Irvington, East Orange, Orange, Belleville — lots are narrow, older and often multi-family, and a fence is doing a security and boundary job first and a decorative one second. West of that line the county climbs the First Watchung Mountain into Montclair, Glen Ridge, West Orange, Verona, Livingston and Millburn, where the questions change to grade, tree cover, historic-district approval and pool code.

That ridge is the defining physical fact of fencing in Essex.
