A six-foot privacy fence looks like it should stop a deer, and it does not — not when pressure is high, not in late winter when food is scarce, and not around a garden worth the jump. What works is unglamorous. What is the best deer fence for a yard or garden?
It depends on what you are protecting and how the property looks. Woven or welded wire is the more durable option where the run takes abuse or the pressure is heavy. Will a regular wood or vinyl fence keep deer out?
At standard residential heights, no — and this is worth being blunt about because it is the most expensive mistake we see. Solid panels can help in a specific way, because deer are reluctant to jump into a space they cannot see, so a tall solid fence performs better than an open one of the same height. Can a deer fence look good, or does it have to be ugly?

Do I need a permit for a tall deer fence in NJ?
Usually yes, and tall fences draw more scrutiny than standard heights because most municipal ordinances cap residential fences well below eight feet. Some towns treat agricultural or garden enclosures differently from property-line fences. Properties near wetlands, conservation land or the Great Swamp can carry additional buffer restrictions. Will a deer fence keep bears out too?
No, and we will not tell you otherwise. No residential fence reliably excludes a determined bear — they climb, and they are strong enough to go through most residential materials. A deer fence may discourage casual passage, but if bear activity is your main concern the honest answer is that fencing is not the solution, and we would rather say that than take the job.
