Why we do not quote aluminum by the foot over the phone

Two black aluminum fences of the same length can be very different jobs. One is a four-foot flat-top run across a level yard with a single walk gate. The other is a five-foot pool enclosure on a slope, with self-closing gates and an old chain link fence to remove first. A per-foot number given before anyone sees the yard is a guess, and the correction comes later.

What we can tell you before we visit is what moves the price: the grade of the aluminum, the style, the height, the gates, whether it encloses a pool, the terrain, and what the quote includes. Understand those and you can read any quote you receive, including ours.

Then we measure and give you a written itemized estimate, with each part of the job on its own line. That is what makes quotes comparable — otherwise you are comparing totals for different jobs.

The four things that set the price of the fence itself

Before terrain and scope enter the picture, these decide what the aluminum itself costs per foot.

Grade

Residential, heavy or commercial

Aluminum fence comes in grades that differ in picket size, rail size and wall thickness. Two black fences that look the same from the street can be very different products — and the heavier grades cost more per foot.

Style

Flat top, spear top, double picket

A plain flat-top picket is the most economical. Spear tops, finials, rings, double pickets for small dogs and accent gates each add to the panel price.

Height

Four feet is not the same job as six

Taller panels use more material and need sturdier posts. Pool enclosures have their own height and spacing requirements, which can narrow the styles that work.

Gates

The most expensive few feet

Every gate needs its own posts, hinges and latch. Pool gates need self-closing, self-latching hardware, and a double drive gate is a real line item on its own.

What moves the total, up or down

Slope and terrain

Aluminum handles slopes well — many panels can be racked to follow the grade — but steep or uneven ground, rock and tight access still mean more time on site.

Pool enclosures

A pool fence has rules on height, picket spacing and gate hardware. We check the requirements for your town before recommending a style, and that can change the specification and the price.

Is there an old fence to remove?

Taking down an old fence, what happens to its concrete footings and hauling the debris is separate work, and it should appear as its own line on any quote. See fence replacement.

Length and corners

Price per foot falls as a run gets longer. Corners, ends and short jogs each need their own post, so a broken-up layout costs more per foot than a straight run.

Color

Black is the standard finish. Bronze, white and other powder-coat colors are available on many styles and can change the price or the lead time.

What the quote actually includes

Layout, help with the permit application, utility markout, cleanup and haul-away — what your estimate covers is written on it line by line. When you compare quotes, check whether the same items are on the other one.

1

Tell us the yard

Rough length, height, style you like, whether it is around a pool and how many gates. Enough for a useful first conversation.

2

Free on-site measure

We measure the run, check the grade and access, look at anything that has to come out, and confirm your township's rules for that address.

3

Written itemized estimate

Panels and posts, gates and hardware, removal and disposal, permit help — each on its own line, so you can compare like with like.

4

Fixed scope, no surprises

The estimate is what you pay for the work described. If something genuinely changes underground, we tell you before we do it, not after.

Aluminum fence cost questions, answered

Aluminum against vinyl and wrought iron, why quotes differ, pool fences and what is included.

How much does an aluminum fence cost in New Jersey?
It depends on the grade, style, height, number of gates, whether it encloses a pool and the terrain — which is why we give a written itemized estimate after measuring instead of a per-foot figure over the phone. National averages are not a reliable guide in northern New Jersey, where labor and disposal costs sit at the higher end. This page explains what moves the number so you can read any quote you get.
Is aluminum more expensive than vinyl?
They are often close, and it depends on the style. A plain four-foot aluminum fence can come in near a vinyl picket fence; a six-foot spear-top aluminum fence with decorative gates costs more. Aluminum is see-through, so if you need privacy, vinyl or wood is usually the better value.
Is aluminum cheaper than wrought iron?
Usually yes, both to install and over time. Aluminum gives the same classic black look without the rust, scraping and repainting that iron needs. See our aluminum styles for the classic black look.
Why do two aluminum fence quotes differ so much?
Usually the grade of the aluminum — picket and rail size — which is hard to see in a photo, and the scope: whether removal of an old fence, disposal and help with the permit are on the quote. Ask each contractor to break those out and the gap normally explains itself.
Does a pool fence cost more?
Often, because pool enclosures have rules on height, picket spacing and self-closing, self-latching gates. We check what your town requires before recommending a style, and the gate hardware is listed on the estimate.
Do you charge for the estimate?
No. The on-site measure and the written itemized estimate are free, with no obligation.
Is financing available for an aluminum fence?
Yes — 0% interest for qualified buyers, with terms over 12, 24 or 36 months and no prepayment penalty.
Does the price include removing my old fence?
When the job needs it, removal appears on your estimate as its own line — taking the old fence down, what happens to the old concrete footings, and hauling the debris away. Seeing it separately is what lets you compare quotes properly.
